The Apostille Convention will officially enter into force in Indonesia on June 4, 2022. From this date, the parties to the Convention are obliged to waive the requirement of legalization of public documents issued by the Indonesian authorities and accept Apostilles issued by the authorized competent authority of Indonesia.
On June 4, 2022, it will be possible to affix an apostille on official documents in Indonesia. Every citizen of Indonesia who has an individual identification number will be able to apply for certification of a document with an apostille through a special application. According to the regulatory framework currently being developed, dozens of documents in various fields will be subject to apostille. In standard cases, the process of certifying a document with an apostille will take no more than three days.
“It is hoped that with the implementation of the Apostille Convention, Indonesia's ease of doing business rating will improve,” said Kahyo Rahadian Muzar, Director General of the General Legal Department of the Indonesian Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.
“By becoming a signatory to the Convention, Indonesia will now follow the positive global trend to simplify the legalization process,” said Andy Rahmianto, Director General of the Protocol and Consular Affairs Department of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.
Foreign documents certified by apostille are recognized in all member countries of the Hague Convention and do not require any other form of certification, for example, consular legalization, which significantly reduces the costs and time spent on certification of documents. To date, 118 states have acceded to the Convention, including the Russian Federation.
Apostille is a stamp of at least 9x9 cm containing the obligatory heading "Apostille" and a reference to the 1961 Hague Convention in French (Convention de La Haye du 5 octobre 1961).
Indonesia has included one exception under Article 1 of the Apostille Convention, legalization will still be required for documents issued by the Indonesian Public Prosecutor's Office.
