Schmidt & Schmidt offers the legalization of documents from Djibouti.

Legalization in Djibouti

Djibouti has not joined the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. Therefore, documents from Djibouti cannot be legalized by apostille, they will only be recognized abroad after consular legalization, meaning their authenticity must be confirmed separately.

By consular legalization the signature and the seal of foreign documents are authenticated. Responsible is the respective embassy of the country in which the document shall be used.

The following documents can be legalized:

  • Extracts from the commercial register
  • Certificates of civil status (certificates of birth, death, marriage and divorce)
  • Education documents (school reports, certificates, diplomas)
  • Judicial decisions
  • Notarially certified copies of documents
  • Notarially certified translations
  • Further notarial documents (authorizations, last will, declarations)

Any documents issued abroad will only be recognised in Djibouti if they are legalised, meaning their authenticity must be separately confirmed.

Legalization of foreign documents for use in Djibouti

Foreign documents must be legalized before they can be used in Djibouti. The representations and embassies of Djibouti all over the world are in charge of this process.

Legalization of documents from Djibouti for use abroad

The exact legalization process of documents from Djibouti depends on the country you wish to use them in. Please feel free to contact us with your request and we will do our best to assist you!

Usually, processing the documents takes us 14 days.

What is an apostille?

What is an apostille? Why do I need an apostille? How do I get an apostille? - Our video will explain everything you need to know about the apostille. If you have a document that needs to be certified with an apostille for use abroad, Schmidt and Schmidt will assist you! We provide apostille services in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Frequently asked questions about Legalization and Apostille

1. What is legalization of documents and what is it needed for?

Legalization is a procedure that grants legal validity to a document issued in one country so that it can be recognized in another country. It confirms the authority of the issuing officer as well as the authenticity of their signature and seal. Legalization is required for official non-commercial documents.

2. How can the document be legalized for another country?

There are the following procedures of legalization of documents:
  • Consular legalization
  • Apostille (a simplified procedure)
  • Legalization by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Consular legalization applies to countries that have not signed the Hague Convention of 1961. The Chamber of Commerce legalizes commercial documents such as contracts or invoices.

3. Is the legalization of the document always required?

No, not always. Some countries have bi- or multilateral agreements that completely revoke legalization requirements. For example, CIEC conventions or bilateral treaties between Germany and Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria, and Switzerland.

4. Where can I make an apostille?

An apostille stamp is applied in the country where the document was issued. The responsible authority is defined by each country that is a party to the Hague Convention of 1961. You can determine the competent authority for each country on the official website of the Hague Convention.

5. Can I apostille a document in the country of destination?

No. The apostille must always be applied in the country where the document was originally issued.

6. What kind of documents can be apostilled?

Apostille is applied to official non-commercial documents of state significance. Commercial contracts, invoices, customs papers, diplomatic and consular documents cannot be apostilled. Documents containing photos (such as ID cards, passports) are not subject to apostillization. The document must be in good physical condition; signatures and seals must be readable. Laminated documents cannot be apostilled.
