Apostille from the Seychelles

Schmidt & Schmidt offers the legalization of documents from the Seychelles by apostille.

The Seychelles has joined the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents in the year 1979. Therefore, no diplomatic authentication or legalization of documents from the Seychelles is required for the legal communication with another member state of the convention. The documents only need to be stamped with an "apostille" by the issuing state's authorities in order to be valid in the state of destination.

Responsible for issuing the apostille are the following institutions:

  • Supreme Court
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Public Prosecutor's Office
  • Government

Documents issued by authorities or other authorized structures (chambers, registries, notaries, etc.) of Seychelles published in English, French or Seychelles can be apostilled.

The process of legalization in Seychelles includes confirmation of their authenticity by authorized officials. After passing through this procedure, a special stamp is placed on the document - an apostille. It can be affixed on the back of the document or on a separate sheet, after which it is hemmed.

An apostille is a stamp of rectangular shape. The heading "Apostille (Convention de La Haye du 5 octobre 1961)" must be in French.

Apostille from the Seychelles

The following documents can be authenticated by apostille:

  • Certificates of civil status (certificates of birth, death, marriage and divorce)
  • Education documents (school reports, certificates, diplomas)
  • Trade register excerpts
  • Judicial decisions
  • Notarially certified copies of documents
  • Notarially certified translations
  • Further notarial documents (authorizations, last will, declarations)
  • Commercial documents legalized by a state organ of registration (articles of incorporation, registration certificates, tax registrations etc.)

Requirements for the documents:

An apostille can be issued exclusively on an original document. Therefore, the latter must be in an apparent good condition, all stamps and signatures have to be clear and readable. Furthermore, it must not contain alien marking and labels.

Additional services

In addition to the legalization of your documents, we can provide you with high quality translations.

If you want to bring company information before the court, it needs to be legalised as well. We are therefore offering extracts from the commercial register of the Seychelles including apostille and translation.

Usually, processing the documents takes us 14 days.

I had to get an apostille for Northern Cyprus documents. They handled everything from start to finish and sent the papers from Turkey to Kyrgyzstan. What I thought would be a huge headache turned out to be super fast and smooth. If you have a complex document situation involving multiple countries, I highly recommend them.

Frequently asked questions about Legalization and Apostille

1. What is legalization of documents and what is it needed for?

Legalization is a procedure that grants legal validity to a document issued in one country so that it can be recognized in another country. It confirms the authority of the issuing officer as well as the authenticity of their signature and seal. Legalization is required for official non-commercial documents.

2. How can the document be legalized for another country?

There are the following procedures of legalization of documents:
  • Consular legalization
  • Apostille (a simplified procedure)
  • Legalization by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Consular legalization applies to countries that have not signed the Hague Convention of 1961. The Chamber of Commerce legalizes commercial documents such as contracts or invoices.

3. Is the legalization of the document always required?

No, not always. Some countries have bi- or multilateral agreements that completely revoke legalization requirements. For example, CIEC conventions or bilateral treaties between Germany and Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Austria, and Switzerland.

4. Where can I make an apostille?

An apostille stamp is applied in the country where the document was issued. The responsible authority is defined by each country that is a party to the Hague Convention of 1961. You can determine the competent authority for each country on the official website of the Hague Convention.

5. Can I apostille a document in the country of destination?

No. The apostille must always be applied in the country where the document was originally issued.

6. What kind of documents can be apostilled?

Apostille is applied to official non-commercial documents of state significance. Commercial contracts, invoices, customs papers, diplomatic and consular documents cannot be apostilled. Documents containing photos (such as ID cards, passports) are not subject to apostillization. The document must be in good physical condition; signatures and seals must be readable. Laminated documents cannot be apostilled.
