These include extracts from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as from the Crown dependencies – Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man.
The business register of the United Kingdom is administered online by the Companies House, an institution under the remit of Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), which is located in Cardiff, Wales.
The register contains information about a large number of legal entities in the United Kingdom: joint-stock companies and limited liability companies; specific types of partnerships (eg. LP and LLP); foreign legal entities registered in the British territories. Information concerning private entrepreneurs, unlimited partnerships and trademarks is not presented in the register.
The Companies House registers company information, checks its accuracy, and makes it available to the public. This institution also deletes entries from the register.
According to the Companies Act 2006, all limited companies in the UK and their branches (including dissolved ones), are obliged to submit their data, such as annual financial statements. Businesses themselves are responsible to present the true and correct information in the register, since the failure to do so may result in sanctions, up to criminal prosecution.
It is important to mention that companies registered in different countries of the UK are regulated by different laws. For instance, businesses registered in England and Wales obey the English law, whereas those registered in Scotland or Northern Ireland obey the laws of their countries.
The roots of the business register of United Kingdom can be traced back to 1844, when the first entries were made. The register has been administered by the Companies House since 1988.

UK Register of Beneficiaries
Since June 25, 2014, the United Kingdom has adopted a legislative act that stipulated the creation of an Open Register of Beneficial Owners of Companies (PSC Register). The main distinguishing feature of the register of beneficiaries in the UK is its openness. Each interested person can enter the register in order to search for the necessary information. In exceptional cases, it is allowed to hide part of the information about the controlling person, if there is a serious threat to his life or the likelihood of violence against him.
Entrepreneurs who decide to do business in England should understand that almost all forms of ownership must follow the law of maintaining a public register of controlling persons.
Namely:
- Joint-stock companies
- English LLP's
- Scottish SLP's
- Limited companies
- Companies with guarantees
- EU company
The only exception is LP.
The following information about the controlling persons:
- First and last name
- Month and year of birth
- Citizenship
- Country of residence
- Control start date
- Address for sending correspondence
- Control basis
Apostille for British extracts
United Kingdom acceded to the The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents on 21 August 1964.
Therefore, the documents issued in the UK are subject to a simplified apostilling procedure, thus the documents gain full legal value in Convention member states after certified translation.
Apostilling usually takes about two weeks.
In addition, you can order certified translation from the English language.
