Schmidt & Schmidt provides extracts from the commercial register of Cuba with a translation and legalization.
Republic of Cuba is an island country in the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean, to the south of the US state of Florida. This is one of the few Marxist-Leninist socialist states left in the world, run by the Communist Party of Cuba, with the President of the Council of Cuba as the head of state. Cuba is a member of the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement, and Organisations of American States. Official language is Spanish. Local currencies are the Cuban peso and the Cuban convertible peso – the latter is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar and mostly issued for tourists. The dual currency system is planned to be abolished at some point in the future.
Cuba is the only country that retained planned economy based on socialist principles. In the 1990s, the Cubans were encouraged to form worker cooperatives. However, in 2011 there were new economic reforms introduced, known as “New Cuban Economy”. The new economy freed some professions from the government control, which boosted individual entrepreneurship in Cuba. Reforms also concerned tax system. Major sectors of local economy are agriculture and tourism, and latter has been growing more popular since the relations between Cuba and the USA improved. Some experts expect the continuing growth of number of economic entities in Cuba, and do not leave out the possibility of some kind of an offshore zone on the island.
Legislation in Cuba is in the process of reformation. Today business activities are regulated by the Constitution, Civil Code, Commercial Code, and other relevant laws.
Cuba is an authoritarian regime with socialist principles. Its legislature is based on Civil Law with some elements of the Spanish and American traditions.
