The Republic of Malta has replaced the official body authorized to carry out the procedure of certifying documents with an apostille. This was reported by the portal of the Hague Conference on Private International Law.
Which Authority Apostilles Documents in Malta
At the end of 2024, Malta announced the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism as the official body authorised to issue Apostilles to documents. Previously, the authorised body was called the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
You can submit documents for apostille and consular legalization in Malta either in person at the Document Reception Service (according to its working hours) or by dropping them in a special box near the main entrance to the Office. The Legalization Department will handle them.
What is the apostille procedure in Malta?
All documents submitted to the box will be ready for collection within three working days from the date of receipt by the Office.
When submitting documents, it is important to consider the following:
- documents must be placed in a sealed envelope marked “Legalization”, each document must indicate the country of use;
- payment must be made by cheque made out to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism (EUR 20.00 for commercial/EUR 12.00 for personal documents) and enclosed in an envelope;
- It is necessary to provide a mobile phone number so that the staff can call back as soon as the documents are ready for issue.
Official public documents requiring legalisation must always contain an original signature of a person present in Malta. The documents will be legalised once the signature has been verified with the original signature on file with the Office.
