The official Israeli government portal now offers a digital apostille service for certain types of documents. These apostilles can be used in countries that have ratified the 1961 Hague Convention, accept electronic apostilles, and maintain diplomatic relations with Israel.
At this stage, only documents that were originally issued in digital format are eligible for electronic apostille. The option to e-legalize scanned copies of paper documents is not available. Traditional paper documents must still be legalized using a physical apostille stamp.
The apostille fee is paid online at the time of application submission.
Currently, digital apostilles are available for documents such as: inheritance orders, will preservation orders, company registration certificates, company name change certificates, notarial certificates, certificates from the Trademarks Department of the Israeli Patent Office, land registry extracts, marriage certificates, matriculation certificates, and death certificates.
Other types of documents are not eligible for e-apostille at this time.
Interestingly, according to Israel’s response in the Hague Conference questionnaire, the country indicates that it recognizes but does not yet issue electronic apostilles — and is still exploring the implementation of such a system.
The section on electronic apostilles on the Israeli government portal was, for a long time, inaccessible despite being indexed by search engines.
An apostille is a standardized international form certifying the authenticity of a document for use in countries that accept this form of legalization. When issued for a paper document, an apostille typically appears as a special stamp placed on the reverse side or attached as an additional sheet.
