On December 22, the Duma has passed a new law on the marking of goods with a special identification mark. According to this law, the government of the Russian Federation can decide which goods are to be marked with an identification number as well a special mark. The Duma shall also define rules concerning the marking. Furthermore, a list is to be created on which companies are allowed to do the marking by the government's order.
Until now marking was only playing a role in terms of technical regulation. The marking's purpose is the protection of consumers. The introduction of indentification numbers is supposed to ensure that goods come on the market legally. The marking has already been successfully introduced for furs.
