SDS Safety Data Sheet is an important document that provides the safety-related information on substances and mixtures. The aim is to inform the customer about the possible dangers in the handling of substances and mixtures, the necessary safety precautions and recommendations in order to be able to ensure health protection, safety at work and the protection of the environment.
A safety data sheet is issued for substances, mixtures, and industrial waste according to GOST 30333-2007. No SDS Safety Data Sheet is required for mineral resources, ready-to-use medicines, ready-to-use perfumery and cosmetic products and ready-to-eat foods. The safety data sheet is required, for example, within the framework of the conformity assessment procedure in accordance with the technical regulation TR EAEU 041/2017 On safety of chemicals.
The standards of GOST 30333-2007 are largely harmonized with the requirements of the REACH regulation. However, there are some peculiarities in structure and content. The Russian Safety Data Sheet consists of two parts - of a title page of the form and of the main part. When preparing SDS, the Russian standards and laws must be observed. In general, the Russian Safety Data Sheet contains more information on hazardous substances and their possible impact on health and the environment. For example, the danger potential of various modes of transport (sea shipping, road transport, air transport, rail transport) must be determined.
The SDS safety data sheet consists of the following sections:
- identification of the substance, mixture, and of the company
- information about the manufacturer
- composition/information on ingredients
- chemical and physical characteristics
- possible dangers
- first aid measures
- fire-fighting measures
- accidental release measures
- handling and storage
- exposure controls/personal protection equipment
- stability and reactivity
- toxicological information
- environmental information
- disposal considerations
- legislation
The safety data sheet shall be drawn up before the product is placed on the EAEU market. The safety data sheet can be registered in the Russian Federation by the "Coordinating Informational Service Center for CIS enterprises. Assistance in the field of chemical product safety". The registration is not compulsory, but it makes the document legally binding. The registration can take up to 30 days. The period of validity of the registration for very dangerous chemical substances is three years, for less dangerous substances - five years.
The following documents are required for registration:
- application
- information letter about the composition of the product
- title page
- Safety Data Sheet
- legislation, standards and standards used in production
