The Commercial Register of Egypt was established in 1934. Its operations are currently regulated by the Commercial Registration Law of 1976 and its 1998 amendments. Theoretically, all companies operating in Egypt must be registered in the Commercial Register. However, its structure is quite complex. It includes 89 offices in various territorial-administrative units of Egypt, including offices of chambers of commerce and the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI – which contains a separate Companies Registration Department, formerly the Department of Companies).
A specific feature of company registration legislation in Egypt is that the registration must be renewed every 5 years.

Egypt is not a party to the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961, abolishing the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents. Therefore, the apostille procedure does not apply in Egypt. Therefore, all Egyptian documents are subject to consular legalization.
