Documents issued in Germany are only recognized in Guyana if they are legalized. This means that their authenticity must be confirmed separately.
Guyana acceded to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents in 2018. On April 18, 2019, the Convention entered into force.
Since the country has only recently acceded to the Convention, the state is currently in a transitional phase from consular legalization to apostille. Therefore, government authorities may sometimes require consular legalization.

Legalization of a document involves verification of the origin of the document in question. Consular legalization is the official confirmation that the signature of the official who signed a document or the seal or stamp on the document is legitimate.
The following documents can be legalized:
- Certificates (Birth, death, marriage, divorce, registration, university diplomas/degrees, etc.)
- Republic of Guyana passport
- Commercial documents (Export certificates, manufacturing certificates, conformity certificates)
- Certified English translations of all foreign language documents are required.
- Documents without the signatures and seals of the notary or the relevant authorized agency/institution will not be processed.
Guyana does not maintain any diplomatic missions in Germany. The Embassy of Guyana in Brussels is responsible for legalization.
