What document legalization services are available in the canton of Zurich?
The State Chancellery confirms that it provides the services of apostille and consular legalization of documents. The signature and seal on an official document, as well as its "functionality," are subject to certification. For use in countries that are members of the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961 , legalization is done through the apostille procedure.
The State Chancellery emphasizes that in some cases, certain details need to be clarified during the legalization process, so applicants are asked to submit their documents in advance, rather than at the last moment.
The State Chancellery asks document holders to check with the authorized authorities of the country where the documents will be used to clarify the requirements for their formatting and legalization.
The State Chancellery does not provide certified translation services. The translator's signature can be notarized. However, it is advisable to check with the organization where the document will be submitted to confirm whether this form of verification of the translation's accuracy is sufficient.
How to Submit Documents for Legalization in Zurich
The State Chancellery of the canton legalizes documents from municipal authorities, educational institutions, medical establishments, and veterinary certificates.
Identity documents, documents from other cantons, and documents from federal authorities, as well as documents signed by private individuals, are not subject to certification in the canton. Documents can be submitted at the counter of the Chancellery or by mail. A maximum of five documents can be submitted in person. You must have an identification document (ID or passport) with you.
